Artist: Henri Matisse
Born in 1869, Matisse qualified as a lawyer before learning his true calling was art. Along with Picasso he is considered one of the greatest artists of the 20th century. Labeled as a Fauve (wild beast) artist, his images showed an expressive language of colour and drawing which won him recognition as a leading figure of modern art.
